A short compilation of the events that occurred on Air Canada Flight 143, also known as "The Gimli Glider". The plane lost both of its engines in mid flight and was forced to land on a drag racing strip.
When the jet lost it's engines, it was too high to land at one airport and too low to land at another. The captains solution was to perform a hand gliding maneuver called slipping (flying sideways) in order to rapidly loose enough altitude to land at the closer airport without gaining so much speed that they wouldn't be able to stop (without reverse engine thrusters).
