Mother India (Hindi: भारत माता, Urdu: بھارت ماتا) is a 1957 Bollywood movie directed by Mehboob Khan, nominated for Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1957. The film is a remake of Mehboob Khan's earlier film Aurat (1940).

In 2005, Indiatimes Movies ranked the movie amongst the Top 25 Must See Bollywood Films.

Credits; * Cast: Nargis, Sunil Dutt, Rajendra Kumar, Raaj Kumar, Kanhaiyalal, Sajid Khan, Chanchal * Dialogues: S. Ali Raza * Music: Naushad * Lyrics: Shakeel Badayuni * Story, Screenplay, Producer & Direction: Mehboob Khan.

Trivia;
* Nargis had long been romantically linked with director and actor Raj Kapoor, but in the end married Sunil Dutt, who co-starred with her in this movie. The marriage seemed scandalous to many at the time, because Sunil had played her son in the movie.

* Rajendra Kumar, who plays Nargis's eldest son and Sunil Dutt's brother in the movie also became a part of their family later on, when his son Kumar Gaurav, married Dutt and Nargis's daughter Anju(Namrata Dutt).

* The film grossed over Rs.40 million. This record was beaten 3 years later by Mughal-E-Azam in 1960.

* This was the first Indian film to ever be nominated in the "Best Foreign Language Film" category at the Oscars in 1957, though Nights of Cabiria eventually got the award. It would not be until 1988, with Salaam Bombay, when India would again be represented at the Oscars.

* Sunil Dutt famously saved Nargis during the fire sequence. Nargis was shown trapped inside a raging fire while Sunil Dutt jumps in and saves her. But the blaze roared out of control leaving Nargis stranded. Sunil Dutt quickly grabbed a blanket and plunged inside and, wrapping the blanket around themselves, the twosome ran out. It meant several, painful burns for Sunil but it also resulted in Nargis falling in love with him. They were married within a year....

Lata Mangeshkar ( born September 28, 1929) is a highly known playback singer in the Indian Hindi movie industry. Mangeshkar's career started in 1942 and has spanned over six decades. She has done playback singing for over 980 Bollywood movies, and has sung songs in over twenty Indian languages. She is the elder sister of the equally accomplished singer, Asha Bhosle....
Awards and recognitions;
Lata Mangeshkar has won several awards and honors, including Padma Bhushan (1969), Padma Vibhushan (1999), Dada Saheb Phalke Award (1989), Bharat Ratna (2001), three National Film Awards, and 12 Bengal Film Journalists' Association Awards. She has also won four Filmfare Best Female Playback Awards. In 1969, she made the unusual gesture of giving up Filmfare Best Female Playback Award, in order to promote fresh talent. She was later awarded Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1993.
In 1984, the State Government of Madhya Pradesh instituted the Lata Mangeshkar Award in honor of Lata Mangeshkar. The State Government of Maharashtra also instituted a Lata Mangeshkar Award in 1992.
In 1974, The Guinness Book of Records listed Lata Mangeshkar as the most recorded artist in the history, stating that she had reportedly recorded "not less than 25,000 solo, duet and chorus backed songs in 20 Indian languages" between 1948 and 1974.
Although the entry has not been printed in Guinness editions since 1991, reputable sources claim that she has recorded thousands of songs, with estimates ranging up to figures as large as 50,000.
Lata is the second vocalist to receive "Bharat Ratna", India's highest civilian honour......

  • In the -60's, started with MOTHER INDIA, indian movies became very popular in Greece. The song "duniya main hum aaye" was adapted, with greek lyrics, and is still considered to be an all time classic in my country. I was too young and could'nt understand much, but i clearly remember how much i was impressed by the colours, the backset, the acting and singing and acting in these films. Like a fairytale, though scary sometimes...

  • @philipposathina - Thank you my dear friend for the very nice and interesting comment.

  • I remember my father loved this song and he was a soldier and he was paralyzed for 29 years.. And this song makes me cry at times.

  • Dear Yuan, thank you for uploading this. I saw this film when I was a young boy and it seeing it again after 50 years evokes a lot of memories and emotions. What a wonderful film that a mother's instinct to struggle for her children is beautifully reflected. Regretfully we do not see such memorable films these days.

    Thank you for your effort in bringing such memories and emotions to all of us.

  • @yuanyuanyuanyin

    Trying to regain the ground. Thanks.

  • @shawneechief - lucky you. I too saw this movie in a Greek cinema on Park Ave in Montreal, but I don't really understand Hindi and definitely do not read Greek, but I still enjoyed the movie.

    @jajakumar - excellent movie and mothers still have that instinct to struggle for their children and they always will, even if they don't put it in the movies anymore. It is just instinctive.

  • One of the classic movies of the fifties. I love this film. Lata Mangeshkar and Late Naushad Sahib produced some awesome memories which are evergreen. Who can forget the accidental love between Nargis and Sunil Dutt. That forced them to get married. Her role in this film was marvelous. I would consider Mother India her best movie. I am sure that the future generations would remember Nargis because of her immortal role. God bless the entire unit of this film.(30th December 2010)

  • beautiful movie, ode to Indian womanhood.
