Catholic Answers Senior Apologist Jimmy Akin explains what the Didache is and where it came from.

What Did Early Christians Really Believe?

The Answer Will Surprise and Amaze You!

The Fathers Know Best: Your Essential Guide to the Teachings of the Early Church is a unique resource that introduces you to the teachings of the first Christians in a way no other work can. It is specially designed to make it easy for you to find the information you want and need. Amazing features in this fact-packed book include: * More than 900 quotations from the writings of the early Church Fathers, as well as from rare and important documents dating back to the dawn of Christian history. * Mini-biographies of nearly 100 Fathers, as well as descriptions of dozens of key early councils and writings. * A concise history of the dramatic spread of Christianity after Jesus told his disciples to evangelize all nations. * Special maps showing you where the Fathers lived, including many little-known and long-vanished locations. * A guide to nearly 30 ancient heresies, many of which have returned to haunt the modern world. * The Fathers' teaching on nearly 50 topics, including modern hot-button issues like abortion, homosexuality, and divorce.

This groundbreaking work presents the teachings of the early Christians in a way unlike any other book. It flings open the doors of the crucial but little-known age covering the birth of Christianity and the triumphant march of the gospel throughout the ancient world.

"We are particularly blessed by this release of Jimmy Akin's superbly compiled synopsis of the writings of the early Church Fathers. There are other works, but Akin's finely selected and categorized collection provides a far more accessible introduction to the early Christians"
—Marcus Grodi, President of The Coming Home Network and host of EWTN's The Journey Home.

  • I'm from the UK. How and when can I tune in to any live shows? Keep up the great work, thanks be to God.

  • @90N9NE09 You can listen to the show online through EWTN Mon-Fri 3-5 PT.

  • One thing they chose not to mention is that the Didache never refers to the wine and bread of the Eucharist as becoming the blood and body of Christ. Instead it says that you should give thanks concerning the cup for the holy vine of David, and concerning the bread for how the Church is being gathered from the ends of the earth into the Kingdom of God.

  • @magister343 There is no mention of using the Didache to reinforce Catholic belief in the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist in this video. There is no nefarious effort on our part to leave out some part of the truth. Chapter 14 of the Didache does, however, reinforce what Catholics believe about the Eucharist and the mass being a participation in Jesus' once-for-all sacrifice.

  • @catholiccom thank you.

  • @magister343 You are correct. However, one thing YOU choose not to mention is that the writings of St. Ignatius of Antioch (a Church father) clearly support the Real Presence and assert that the Holy Eucharist truly is what Catholics believe it to fully be. I encourage you to read his letters with that in mind. God bless.

  • It just gets earlier and earlier! It dates LATE first century to early second century.

To claim it equal to a gospel is nuts. There is no reason to assume that it was done by an orthodox Christian. It should only be used for backing up other writings. There is not enough information of its origins!

  • @magister343 You're kidding, right? The text doesn't explicitly mention that, but why would it need to? We have assertions of the Real Presence from St. Matthew, St. Mark, St. Luke, St. John, and St. Paul already. What the Didache does is supplement that with it's reference to the Eucharist as a Sacrifice.

  • Great Jim Akin. Great apologist.

All of the church fathers spoke out against sexual immorality (porneuseiv), but few bothered to define it. The term always included prostitution, but could refer disapprovingly to almost any sexual activity. When i discussed the matter with Jonathan Hill (an agnostic theologian from Oxford University) he said that the only father he knew to have explicitly condemned homosexuality is Clement of Alexandria, whose Paedagogus also condemned laughing too much or having sex before dinner.
