Richard Muller of the Berkeley Earth Surface Temperature project discusses his recent Wall Street Journal article in that has caused a stir in the debate about climate change. In part two of this interview, Muller talks about what the layperson can take away from his research and how policies such as cap and trade won't reverse global warming unless China, India and developing countries contribute as well. Interviewed by Rob Nikolewski of Capitol Report New Mexico, 10/31/11.

  • @TravelerDiogenes, virtually "eliminated" smog from our cities is absurd. Look up "most polluted U.S. cities" and you'll see the problem is far from solved. Population growth has negated earlier gains and fossil fuels can only be made so clean.

Also, the claim that it hasn't warmed since 1998 was based on a cherry-picked starting point in an extreme El Nino year. Look up "NOAA: 2010 Tied For Warmest Year on Record" (along with 2005).

And then there's all that melting ice you probably ignore.

  • Everything any scientist says is sensationalized by the media.

Use google scholar and learn to use it to hear direct from the scientists instead.

Also look at the flow of money and understand it mirrors the flow of power.

If you Think Exxon, Mobile, Shell ect. want cap and trade, or any recognition global warming is real you are dead wrong. They perhaps want to pervert it for their benefit and monopolize green technology if they cannot stop it, but hope for business as usual

  • @flanksteak2 Makes no sense, shithead.

  • @mphello And you don't cause global warming getting on your computer and making your holier-than-thou posts.

    Dick

  • Tough shit. AGW deniers are worse than Holocaust deniers.

Holocaust deniers do not CAUSE the Holocaust, which is past.

But AGW deniers DO cause worsening damage from AGW by their delay and interference tactics.

  • He's a hypocritical piece of shit. He slandered the IPCC and climate scientists for decades, even though they had already proved the fact of anthropogenic global warming (AGW) ten times over already, and we've been fighting for radical action on it since 1990. Now, just because he's finally changed his mind in 2011, Muller thinks he deserve an award?

He deserves to be tortured and executed for the damage he has knowingly done.

  • what a coward. Global warming is real. but both sides have a point. WTF!?

  • A really nice job, Mike Olewski! I find it hard to believe Dr. Miller isn't outraged by, for instance, the WSJ headline. He seems too comfortable for belief.

Also, speaking as a scientist, he doesn't acknowledge his layman's status when it comes to the economic choices involved. Cheap, abundant energy is the foundation of modern civilization. He seems unaware of the trade-offs.

  • @TravelerDiogenes, by "deniers" I was referring to the Koch brothers who partly funded it. Pay attention to the whole story. The more I read about Muller (especially his mindless attacks on Al Gore; an easy target), the less I respect his objectivity, but he did a good thing overall with that dataset.

  • @Antithropocentric -

    Backfired on the "deniers"?

First off, by saying "deniers" you are equating them with Holocaust deniers. If so, you show your total ignorance and are insulting those who went through the Holocaust.

Right in part one of this video Muller says (around the 2:45 mark), referring to his recent Wall Street Journal article, Muller says “I never said you shouldn’t be a skeptic. I never said that.”

    Pay attention.
