My local primary care trust, NHS Sussex, refuses to supply me with a cough assist machine which will keep me out of hospital when I have a chest infection. Hopefully you can hear the improvement in cough strength & duration with the machine, despite being muffled by the face mask. The current machine costs £250 per month and the hire period ends next week. I need a long-term solution! Contact me if you want to help jon.hastie@hotmail.com

  • I'm wondering how much it would cost the NHS should a stay in hospital be needed. How much valuable resources and staff would be used in a situation that could have easily been avoided by a machine?

  • @maxymint Well one report puts it at £2,000 per day, or £14,000 a week. The machine costs £4,000 and will prevent multiple hospital admissions

  • This so absurd. Health shouldn't be fought for nor paid for, it should be a fucking right.

  • You really need this device to clear your airways. It is also needed if you get something caught in your throat such as food or a pill. Whenever you travel be sure to carry this with you and make sure you have a power converter so you can use this in your van. Some hospitals may have this in their respiratory department but most will be unfamiliar with this device. Good luck, hope you can get this soon.

  • Its kind of inhumane really, have they no idea what happens when your airway is blocked and you cant breath in or out. I hope you get this sorted Jon.

  • A stay in intensive care could cost hundreds of thousands say for a 1 week stay
