The WV Presents "GHOST TRAIN INTO HISTORY: Riding the West Virginia Northern Railroad" Part 1

SPECIAL PRESENTATION! "Ghost Train Into History: Riding the West Virginia Northern Railroad", Part One of Two.

A special two part look back on the now-defunct West Virginia Northern Railroad that ran nearly 11 miles between Kingwood and Tunnelton in the mountains of Preston County, WV. The railroad featured a double switchback and several 5 percent grades, not unlike the steam operated Cass Scenic Railroad, also of WV.

The line ran as a coal hauling railroad and was originally owned by the Patriot Coal Company until 1991, when it ceased operations. In August of 1994, it was reincarnated by a civic group, which was organized as Kingwood Northern, Inc., and ran for 5 seasons as a tourist hauling railroad. Sadly, in November of 1999, the line ceased operations after what had originally been billed as the "First Annual Railfan Weekend", ironically surviving exactly 100 years (1899-1999) and not quite making it into the new millennium. Locomotives and equipment were removed from the site in September of 2002, and today little remains to show that a railroad ever existed there.

Part One features a ride from Kingwood to Tunnelton, as well as turning activities at the Marion Siding on the return trip. Footage is presented in geographical order, and was filmed in both August and October 1995.
