We love Cagney. People are well aware of his gangster roles -- cruel, but tough and lovable. "Footlight Parade" is a very overlooked display of Cagney's enormous musical talents as a vaudeville entertainer. I still hope someone puts Cagney's "Shanghai Lil" onto You Tube.

James Cagney was the most UNIQUE actor in the history of the movies,'Howdybub'.(as you and I are well aware !!! ) How can people even 'look' at todays( 'movie stars' )ha ! when there existed 'real talent' like Cagney? Yes, i am really surprised there is no 'Shanghai Lil' on youtube. I have the movie Footlight Parade' taped in 1983 on TDK Vhs.....it still plays well !

Thank you, Alzahad. I appreciate your comment. I wish someone would post on You Tube the scene in which James Cagney performs "Shanghai Lil" in the movie "Footlight Parade". Then, everyone who looks at You Tube today can see what true musical comedy genius is.

Wow ! Nobody could have said it better,'Howdybub9 ! James Cagney is an American Treasure, and No-one but no-one could do it with more flair and verve than James Cagney ! 'Foottlight Parade, a masterpiece with some of the greatest of all hollywood talent...

If you really want to see how fantastic "Shanghai Lil" was, you must see the original James Cagney version. This Michael Ball parody is watered down treacle. Ten years before he won the Best Actor Academy Award for "Yankee Doodle Dandy", James Cagney scored a huge triumph by performing "Shanghai Lil" in "Footlight Parade" (1933). See Cagney's performance and you'll see true greatness, and you'll realize how anemic this Michael Ball version is.
