Whilst most European economies are crumbling under the debt crisis one country is bucking the trend, proving that austerity measures can simultaneously inspire growth and make a nation proud.

After years running an all inclusive welfare state, Sweden was by the early 90s, in deep crisis. The government pulled on the emergency brake and the social sector was reformed massively. Yet,"in comparison to many other countries, the Swedes have a great confidence in the state". Drastic austerity measures were coupled with good tax incentives and an open budget. "We have a very long tradition of making information available to the public; this principle has had a big impact."

  • @Viljarism

It's swedish, equivalent to head of personnel or head of human resources. Chef means boss

Your child should be potty trained before they turn 1. I know I was and my brother was also. Sweden is one of the best countries when it comes to people and services.

I really wish they would relax some of their drug laws though.

  • My Dad who is Swedish would agree with you!! Being half Swedish (Mom was German) I have to agree with you!! Sadly we only speak bits and pieces as my parents were not raised fully in it. If I ever have a family and my husband is from another culture my kids will know it and who they are. Neat you lived in Ottawa. I was born in Kingston but an Ottawan since I was 2. Take Care.

its simple - scandinavians arent pussies like north americans are. they arent afraid of everything and dont think that everyone is out to get them. APPARENTLY your mothers way is the best, but you need to consider that scandinavians are happier and more productive than canadians. i have lived in both ottawa and stockholm and i can tell you that everything in sweden is just better.

  • Love Swedish meatballs

  • Daycare at a year old? That means that a stranger no matter how educated is going to potty train your child. With all the mental hang ups around that and rushing your kids to grow up that cant be good in the long run. I think my moms way was best. I never knew daycare and only had a babysitter or two a few times and school started at 5 or 6. NOBODY can give a mothers care. If they can you should not have kids.

  • @Israeldid9111: Sure, if you see Palestinians as Jordanians then I guess you can use that logic... Using most people's logic however Linus Torvalds isn't Swedish. //Swede.

  • 4:40 Some Swede needs to update his English. He's a Personal Chef? For whom does he cook? lol

  • @chica476 Correct me if I am wrong, but the maker of Linux is a Finn of Swedish descent?

  • @Israeldid9111

linux was developed by a Finn... Linus Torvalds. These things have nothing to do with a country's political/economic system. What are you babbling about?
