'THE COLOUR OF WINTER' ~ NATIVE PLANTS ~ THESE IMAGES, TAKEN IN THE WINTER MONTH OF JULY IN AND AROUND SOUTH - EAST QUEENSLAND AUSTRALIA.

THE GREVILLIA IS AN EVERGREEN PLANT WITH NEEDLE-LIKE TO FERN-LIKE FOLIAGE AND DISTINCTIVE FLOWERS.
THESE NECTAR - RICH FLOWERS ATTRACT BIRDS AND INSECTS. GREVILLEAS ARE AMONG THE MOST POPULAR AND FREQUENTLY GROWN NATIVE PLANTS, BECAUSE THEY ARE ADAPTABLE, HARDY AND BRIGHT. THEY FLOWER FOR RELATIVELY LONG PERIODS, AND ARE ONE OF THE BEST PLANTS TO ATTRACT BIRDS TO THE GARDEN.

WITH MASSES OF SMALL GOLDEN BALL-SHAPED FLOWERS, WATTLES ARE THE MOST WIDESPREAD OF ALL AUSTRALIAN PLANTS. 'WATTLE' IS A COMMON NAME FOR TREES AND SHRUBS IN THE GENUS ACACIA.
ONE SPECIES OF WATTLE, ACACIA PYCNANTHA (GOLDEN WATTLE) IS THE FLORAL EMBLEM OF AUSTRALIA AND IS FEATURED ON THE COAT-OF-ARMS.
FOR MANY YEARS NOW OUR ATHLETES HAVE WORN GREEN AND GOLD , OUR NATIONAL COLOURS, INSPIRED BY WATTLE.

BRACHYCHITON 'BEAU BELLS' MAGNIFICENT FEATURE TREE WITH A BRILLIANT FLOWERING DISPLAY OF CLUSTERS OF DEEP PINK BELL FLOWERS.

THE RAINBOW LORIKEET, AS ITS NAME IMPLIES, HAS ALL THE COLOURS OF THE RAINBOW. THIS COLOURFUL PARROT IS UNMISTAKABLE WITH ITS BRIGHT RED BEAK AND COLOURFUL PLUMAGE. LORIKEETS HAVE SPECIALIZED BRUSH-TIPPED TONGUES FOR FEEDING ON NECTAR AND SOFT FRUITS. THIS SPECIES OF PARROT IS FOUND ALONG THE NORTHERN AND EASTERN SEABOARD OF AUSTRALIA, AND THROUGHOUT OTHER AREAS OF THE PACIFIC REGION.

The Superb Fairy Wren ~ Common and familiar across South-Eastern Australia. The male has a striking bright blue forehead. The females and juveniles are predominantly grey-brown.

Honeyeaters are a large and diverse family of small to medium sized birds. This loud, bold common bird found in Australian gardens, helps to control insect pests.

'DRIE' ~ THIS SONG BY DEUTER WAS TAKEN OFF THE ALBUM 'ATMOSPHERES'.
