Es un manga y anime creado por Nobuhiro Watsuki. Ambientado en los primeros años de la era Meiji, afectando también al argumento acontecimientos sucedidos en la anterior era Tokugawa en Japón. El personaje principal, que da nombre a la serie, está basado en un personaje histórico llamado Kawakami Gensai y con amplias similitudes con otros personajes históricos como el ronin Musashi Miyamoto, a pesar de no ser un ronin, su nombre es Kenshin Himura.
