you will find a list of articles about UNSAFE USE OF ALUM when you search in google with words such as ( use of alum + pickles) .
Each country has its own FOOD REGULATIONS AND what is allowed in one may not be allowed in others. In USA use of alum is strngly not recommended. USE of ALUM in INDIAN PICKLES is not a traditional use at all, since INDIAN PICKLES ARE NOT CANNED,or treated after curing& seasoning.Alum in india is used for emergency water treatment and for cosmetic use after shaving.

alum is comlex salt of non standard elements and putiy. US FDA AND USDA does not recommend its use in the final pickling liquid for canning. The use of ALUM IN indian style pickles is a NO NO. If you like crispy pickle use shorter time salt curing prior to spicing step. Its use in cosmetic and water purification in many countries is also regarded as unsafe by WHO/FAO. USE GOOGLE SEARCH ENGINE AND ALUM TO FINE MANY SAFETY REPORTS ABOUT ALUM. I do not recoommend its use in spicy indian pickles.
