Music journalist and author Will Hodgkinson interviews singer-songwriter David Gray. Although Gray released his first album in 1993, he did not receive worldwide recognition until his 1999 album White Ladder catapulted him to fame and fortune. With seven albums under his belt, Gray has won two Ivor Novello Awards for songwriting and received a Grammy nomination. Here he describes what inspired him to write the haunting songs, This Year's Love, The One I love, You're The World To Me and Breathe, before giving an exclusive performance of them.

  • Hmmm he doesn't even need BAND hell he's fantastic solo! :))

  • I love songbook its such an intimate show where artists really show their passion and creativity!

  • A british musician like him you can´t show how to make music. "Music" is his second prename. David "Music" Gray. :D

  • @gsantana2004 No it wasn't. It was written for the movie 'This Year's Love" in 1999. 'The Girl Next Door" didn't come out for another 5 years. It was in that movie, but was not written for it.

  • it was written for the movie "'the girl nextdoor''

  • @bboytomo bit sad that comment of yours about 'some fuckwit from the 70s'. I think his style of interviewing musicians in Songbook is great. He doesn't fall in the common trap among journalists of talking too much and shows restraint where appropriate. His main role is to make sure the musician feels comfortable in the interview so they can perform at their best.

  • The interviewer's arm/elbow looks alot like a foot @ 6:14 it's so freaky!

  • haha look at the way that poof stares at David Gray all lovingly at 0:02! This is like a time capsule, David Gray, a contemporary singer-songwriter/pianist/guitarist, being interviewed by some fuckwit from the 70s!

  • great performance of this song. A master of his craft at work.

  • yeah, ur right, he is a knob cheese
