I do have the same problem as you, and I have a simple voice + accent to go with it, and when I show friends the work I've done for English, they're shocked, and I feel offended they didn't perceive me to be clever, I guess it comes with time. :/

Usually, a lot of analogy helps to make a point more vivid. I recently tried to describe Deism; When I explained it in my own words, I failed. Then, I said, imagine a programmer programming a game.
