Canadian Goose Attacking Moorhen

I came across his Canadian Goose (gans) in Delft, The Netherlands biking home- he is attacking and eventually killed this Moorhen (waterhoentje). The male moorhen appeared to be protecting his nest and you can see his mate, the female, sitting on the nest sometimes in the background.

By the time I got there, it was already too late, the male moorhen was killed, violently by the goose, whom was also with his partner.

It is the way things work in nature, but it was sad to see. I never realized Canadian geese killed, with such intent, like that?

They just had a guy in Holland last week who got put in the hospital by the same type of goose- his arm got shredded by a relentlessly attacking Canadian goose.

That is a pity about your koi pond- those geese own it now until after they head south again.

If you look up information about the moor hen you will see it eats other birds eggs - which is probably why this goose went after it.

@GooseGrl172 geese...pffffft...we shoot them for sport here in Britain when we see their flocks heading over. I had over 300 last season...great fun.

I think they were introduced to europe in the 17th century. Never heard that they spread here naturaly before...
