  • I have an alternate take of this on an old RCA Vintage Series LP of Jack Teagarden recordings. The solos are a lot different, and I think better in most cases. I wonder why the decision to go with this take. I also have a Teagarden CD with both takes of "The Blues." The cool part about that one is that what seemed like a straight reading of a melody by TD on the version I knew before that turned out to be improvised with the other version completely different.

  • @halvickery Yep - I used to have a CD of "The Complete Metronome Recordings" on Bluebird from around 1990 or so that included both recordings from "A Jam Session At Victor" from 1937, but it was mainly on the 1939-1949 Metronome bands, including alternates on both the 1939 and 1949 sessions.

Somewhat agreed on the solos, but I think the reason this take was issued was because of tighter ensemble work, which was decidedly sloppy & 'unsure' on the alternates.

  • Can you post "The Blues" duet with Tommy Dorsey and Jack Teagarden please. Thank you.

  • @macree01 REALLY sorry about the late reply - been under the weather for most of the time since before Christmas & your comment must've completely slipped past me.

I'll get to work this weekend on new transfers of both "Blue Lou" and "The Blues" from this record. Seeing as how I've gotten requests for "The Blues" over the past few months, I guess it's high time I get my ass moving on it. ;)

  • I have the Metronome All-Stars LP with this one on it. Can anyone put up "The Blues," from the same January, 1939, session. It's a jam done on the spot, with a terrific duet by Teagarden and T. Dorsey, and featuring Arthur Rollini, Benny, Goodman, Bunny Berigan, Bob Haggart, Bob Zurke, and Ray Bauduc. Mine is playable but with a lot of wear from an earlier me!

  • @msjazzmeblues Just posted a reply on this page - gonna try to get to making new transfers of both "Blue Lou" and "The Blues" from this session sometime this weekend. :)
