My promised second version, with better video quality and a more stable camera position. I have unfortunately not been able to make my camera setup totally proof from vibrations, they are quite powerful.

  • I own a SM4 too :)

But I always have to apply much pressure on the keys to get a full and clear keystroke... the types move very smoothly until the very last 1/4 away from the paper. To get them over this point is much harder. They doesn't really "stick" there (I put a good amount of oil in the type mechanics), but your keystrokes seem so much smoother. Is it a matter of muscels in my fingers or is there another reason for this kind of problem?

    thx

(sorry for any spelling mistake, i'm german)

  • @benelauer Ah, it is no problem, I bought this because I fixed an SM3 for a German. As for how to keep the keystrokes smooth, that is because of regular maintenance...every 8 months, take a bronze brush or stiff toothbrush, and some alcohol or lighter fluid, and clean down in the narrow space the typebars travel in, below the ribbon. Then, apply some oil (like 3-in-One oil) into each of those spaces individually, and move the typebars to work it in...and then everything will be very smooth!

  • @benelauer I advise you NOT to put oil in the typebar spaces, because it will be a dust magnet and they will clog soon, especially if you are not using the machine very often.

  • @viorelagocs True, but not really an option in my climate (gulf coast). Running any kind of steel machinery like this dry will cause them to very quickly rust; even without that, it wears away the steel and loosens the fit. It's true that the oil is a dust magnet and clogs eventually; note that I instructed the user to clean between the spaces with a bronze or nylon brush before re-oiling. I've used grease instead before, but it merely delays the same problem and is much harder to clean later.
