US President George W. Bush has signed a 162 billion dollar defense spending plan that will pay for fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan until the next president takes office.
The package has been approved by Congress and includes doubling college benefits for troops and veterans and provides a 13-week extension of unemployment benefits.
The plan also provides 2.7 billion US dollars in emergency flood relief for the Midwest.
The bill means the U.S. will have provided more than 650 billion dollars for the Iraq war over the last five years. Operations in Afghanistan have so far cost nearly 200 billion US dollars.
