All photos by Mike Black, copyright 2009. Top row, left to right: Nicole Atkins, Chris Donofrio, Brad York, Tony Chick, and Rafael Fusco. Bottom row: the band practices at the Moon Studio and performs live at The Stone Pony in Asbury Park, New Jersey, on May 22, 2009. The audio comes from this very same show, and was recorded by PRProsNJ. It can be viewed here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SICm5VtGKco The piano part was developed and added to the live recording by InSpookysDoghouse in 2010. Check out more keyboard videos of Nicole Atkins' songs at the InSpookysDoghouse YouTube channel. Backstory: At the time of this concert, the original version of "The Black Sea" was still known as "The Sea." A few weeks later, giving a separate, new identity to the new band (apart from the previous lineup that had comprised "The Sea"), Nicole dubbed them "The Black Sea." The core of the group included Nicole, drummer Christopher Donofrio, guitarist Bradley York, and bassist Anthony Chick. Their current bands are listed in the tag section below. Performing a few gigs as the keyboardist, including that particular night, on a borrowed keyboard from Mike Black, was Rafael Fusco. Rafael is playing an organ sound on this song, "The Tower." Mike Black is an accomplished keyboardist and ambient synth composer in his own right, and I highly recommend his album "Go/No-Go." A studio version of "The Tower" appears on Nicole's album, "Mondo Amore," which was released on February 8, 2011. It was co-written by her and Robert Harrison, formerly of Cotton Mather and currently of Future Clouds & Radar. I first heard it when she opened for The Avett Brothers at the Peace Center in South Carolina in 2008, so this epic has been around for some time.
