Vern you don't need to spend the money with the sanctuary, for example, i used that money to buy a house and to boost the Golden Touch achiev. (100k gold) then when i had a lot of money i upgraded it, its worth it

In order to join the thieves guild, you have to to talk to brynjolf in the bee and barb in riften or in the stalls where they sell food, armour, etc at riften. Do his mission. If you fail his mission it won't matter because brynjolf will still let you in the thieves guild.
