A Union Pacific heavy freight train loaded with contaminated dirt and debris heads south past the Millbrae Intermodal Station on its way to San Jose, CA using main track #1, normally reserved for northbound trains. Led by C44ACCTE #5691, ex-Southern Pacific C44AC #6400, and #7102, this train will eventually head north through Oakland, CA and then eastward towards Roseville, CA. The 3 AC4400s arrived in South San Francisco early Tuesday morning where I filmed them in South San Francisco. Six axle power is rare along the SF Peninsula so this shoot was worth staying up for. Video was taken on 11/11/09 at 12:19am.

  • Great catch! Nice seeing six-axle units; welcome change of pace from the GP40.

  • Thanks! I'm guessing they will be appearing on a weekly basis for a while!

  • i almost dragged myself out to the tracks to catch this in Palo Alto but i had to get up early in the morning

  • It's ok, I had an extra cup of coffee that evening so I was already wired when I heard the train shove out.

  • Is that on the cal train rail??? or has there always been a freight line there?

  • Yeap, freights mostly run early in the morning to San Francisco but the heavy haulers run mostly at night when Caltrain service starts to wind down.
