Gitxsan hereditary chiefs perform an Eagle down ceremony on their traditional territory at Amazay Lake in nortwest BC in late August. Northgate Minerals wants to kill the 6-kilometre long, pristine mountain lake by using it as toxic tailings pond for 750,000 tonnes of acid producing waste rock from a proposed nearby open pit copper/gold mine. A joint Canada-BC review panel that heard arguments from the Gitxsan and Northgate in May will release its decision by mid-September about whether to allow the lake to turned into a toxic soup.
