Researchers are monitoring addax in the Sahara Desert with a network of camera traps set up under shade trees in Niger's Termit/Tin Toumma region. In this series of photos, the addax is excavating a hollow beneath a shade tree to find cool sand in which to lay when it is 106 degrees outside!
Prior to this work no one was 100% sure what addax were doing or where they were going during the hottest part of the year. This work will ultimately help identify all the areas important to the addax for survival.
The Saint Louis Zoo is one of several zoos working with the Sahara Conservation Fund to establish a protected area for Saharan wildlife like the addax. For more information on the Saint Louis Zoo's conservation programs, visit http://www.stlzoo.org/wildcareinstitute.
