There are continuous and stop sound letters. The best words to teach stretching and blending sounds to read a word have continuous sound letters that can be stretched until a reader is ready to make the sound for the next letter. The words from p. 59 in Phonics Pathways: Clear Steps to Easy Reading and Perfect Spelling have continuous sounds for the first letters in the words. Every word on the page is a CVC pattern. CVC patterns usually make a vowel have a short sound. Each word on this page has short vowel sounds. It is a great place to start teaching a reader to blend.
The page can be used for practice without magnetic letters.
