@arsjth The Feds didn't waste the money, it's the private companies that broke the law.

Australia Public debt
18.6% of GDP (2009 est.)
14.7% of GDP (2008 est.)
note: the Commonwealth government eliminated its net debt in 2006, but continues a gross debt issue to support the market for risk-free securities.
Just imagine last year your personal income & expenses lead to you having a $20k surplus & after 5 years like this you had $100k in the bank.
Then u marry a new person & they spend so much money that it exceeds what you earned by $200k. welcome to a labour govt

@arsjth "We now have this huge deficit'
Not according to Glen Stevens the RBA Govenor.
"There is virtually no net public debt in the country at all in contrast to much of the developed world,"
"The most recent figures out of Canberra was a peak of five or six per cent of GDP. So far from that being the highest in history, it is closer to the lowest."
That is a deficit of 5 to 6% nothing to worry about when you consider Greece has 130%

"They should have pissed it all on the wall like Howard did "
No! we had a $20 bill surplus when howard left government.
We now have a huge deficit....Rudd pissed it up against the wall, buildling school halls that nobody wanted instead of Hospitals that we do need. Building costs at $4000 sqm so the system is being rorted.
Not2 mention the people killed & houses burnt down thru the debacle insulation scheme.
Rudd will go becos he is an angry man like u. & a liar & a spendthrift

@arsjth I agree. They should have pissed it all on the wall like Howard did thru welfare for the rich parasites eg private health insurance rebates, no means testing on anything like 1st home buyer's, and wars for corporate profit to make the Republican Party look good, bailing out mate's of the Liberal Party including Howard's own brother, lying, & antidemocratic propaganda campaigns at tax payer's expense to push draconian IR laws against the national interest; unlike this fair and needed tax.
gee if they didnt waste the surplus of the previous government in schemes like the insulation debacle, the school halls shambles & the $900 harvey norman hand out then we would have had lots of money to reinvest.
Fancy the government who squandered the countries savings claiming they are going to save the money from this GBNT.
