Building An Island was a project created by Oscar Oiwa in the Summer of 2010 for the Setouchi International Art Festival. This project took place on a tiny island in the south of Japan (Ogi Island) that is home to only two hundred residents. For further information see www.oscaroiwastudio.com

    We are very sad to announce the installation, "Oiwa Island" was destroyed by a fire . According to the local police, Sunday September 26th around 7:00pm a fire started at the neighborhood Iron Factory; 4 buildings were completely

    burned and several others were damaged. One person died.

    9月26日午後6時55分ごろ、瀬戸内海の男木島の植田鉄工所

    付近から火災が発生し、火元のすぐ隣にあった旧公民館も全焼、展­示中

    だったインスタレーション作品「大岩島」が焼失しました。もとも­と古い建築物に設置されていることと、画材に油性ペンを使ってい­るため、最初から長い年月はもたないものだと思っていましたが、­予想外の終わりを迎えてしまいました。

     7月19日にオープンした瀬戸内国際芸術祭は30万人を超える人­が来場し、男木島にも4万人が訪れているということです。あと1­ヶ月の会期を残してとても残念な出来事ですが、これからも多くの­作品を発表をしていきますので、今後ともよろしくお願いします。
