Taken from "The John Martin Project" from the Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle upon Tyne this is the introduction to the whole of this study of John Martin. He was one of the school of Romantic Painters of the 19th century and had a long and varied career as a painter and engraver. He was not immediately recognised as the important artist that he became with time. He used the poem 'The Bard' by Thomas Gray as a basis for this painting that is on permanent display at the Laing. A lot of the time people have the mistaken idea that they have to know a lot about art before they can visit a museum or a gallery, my attitude is that your reaction and feeling about a painting is as good as anyone else's it is how you regard it that matters to you. With this project we have tried to give an objective, reasoned and reasonable approach to looking at a picture and a guide to how you can articulate your own feelings for a picture.
