PERDIDE [Boris Lelong]

Perdide is a wild planet imagined by writer Stefan Wul in his novel "The Orphan of Perdide" (1958).

A few years ago, while discovering René Laloux and Moebius's movie adaptation, "The Masters of Time" (1982), I was struck by the lush sounds that illustrate the scenes taking place in the wilderness of planets Perdide and Devil-Ball.

Created by Pierre Tardy and Christian Zanesi, these electro-acoustic soundscapes give life to a fascinating insectoïd world, that I wished could be listened to in a lengthy way and independantly from the film. Since such a record doesn't exist, I thought of doing it myself.

I started by picking the few moments in the movie when the sounds can be heard without dialog nor music. I recut, reworked and deployed them over an hour. I then added my own textures, floating gently throughout this vibrant environment.

After two years of work, I ended up with this new soundscape that echoes the strange beauty of Perdide and Devil-Ball but also the phosporescent nights of Pandora in James Cameron's "Avatar" (which I watched for the first time a few hours after completing the mastering of the album...)

With its thematics and sensibility, this immersive work connects to another realm of animated cinema : Hayao Miyazaki's films and the mysterious, seductive animism they carry over.

P E R D I D E

Perdide est une planète sauvage imaginée par l'écrivain Stefan Wul dans son roman "L'Orphelin de Perdide" (1958).

En découvrant il y a quelques années l'adaptation cinématographique de René Laloux et Moebius, "Les Maîtres du Temps" (1982), j'ai été frappé par les sons luxuriants qui accompagnent les scènes se déroulant sur les terres sauvages des planètes Perdide et Devil-Ball.

Créés par Pierre tardy et Christian Zanesi, ces paysages sonores électro-acoustiques donnent vie à un monde insectoïde passionnant qu'on aimerait pouvoir écouter dans la longueur, indépendamment du film. Un tel disque n'existant pas, j'ai eu envie de le faire moi-même.

J'ai commencé par récupérer les quelques passages du film dans lequels on peut entendre ces bruitages sans dialogue ni musique. Je les ai redécoupés, retravaillés et déployés sur plus d'une heure. J'y ai ensuite ajouté mes propres textures, flottant avec douceur au sein de cet environnement foisonnant.

Au fil de deux années, j'ai ainsi composé un nouveau paysage sonore, qui fait écho à l'étrange beauté de Perdide et à Devil-Ball mais aussi aux nuits phosphorescentes de Pandora, dans le film de James Cameron, "Avatar" (que j'ai vu pour la première fois quelques heures après avoir terminé le mastering de l'album...)

Cette oeuvre immersive fait écho par sa thématique et sa sensibilité à un autre pan du cinéma d'animation : les films d'Hayao Miyazaki et l'animisme mystérieux et séduisant qu'ils véhiculent.
