THIS IS NOT AN INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEO, it was made as a bit of fun for a friend, hence the Benny Hill sound track. I realise that when pointing brickwork you must pull the mortar into your previous application, i.e. if you are right-handed work from right to left. The more intelligent of you will be aware that when making this movie I am using poetic licence owing to the position of the camera and necessary frame cuts. So please no more smart ass comments from one-dimensional bricklayers on my three-dimensional presentation.
thats a reglet joint shouldn't that be caulked?

tip: on new install keep mortar joint raked back approx 1/2" then fill with elastomeric caulk, this can be performed on existing repair too ......... grind out............clean then caulk......... prevents water intrusion at flashing and brick transition area......

Not always the case with wetting the joint before re-pointing. It all depends on the original Mortar and Bricks. Some Bricks and Sands are dryer than others. If you have a VERY dry existing joint then a little dampening is good, but for already damp/moist joints, no water is needed. Extra water will soak into your new Mortar joint and make it a real b*stard to joint up. Too much troweling of a new Mortar joint will leave an uneven colour to your new joints. But that is only if you want it fancy.

Its a good idea to wet out the Mortar joint before repointing (stops the water out of the cement from being sucked out by the surrounding, thus making the join fail within a year or two, A common flashing mistake).
