On 9 February 2010 the PSA and other unions protested outside Parliament about the Government's plan to privatise prisons. The last time a prison was privatised in New Zealand it cost more to run and provided a worse service.Corrections Department figures show it cost the Australian company that managed the Auckland Remand Prison from 2000 to 2005, $43,000 per inmate to run the prison, while Corrections operating costs per remand prisoner were $36,000

  • Good that you are opposing prison privatisation. I have too many whanau incarcerated and would like to hear more from prisoners directly & those who advocate prison abolition. Build Communities Not Prisons.

  • Not many people realise that these PPP (Private Public Partnerships) result in our taxpayer dollars going offshore as profits to the companies who "win" or are given the contracts.

The money should remain in taxpayer hands and be used directly by government to employ Kiwis where there is no requirement to return a profit to shareholders.
