he wasn't actually dead, the monitor was showing his beat, but as it stopped as soon as she took the things from his body, he was probably just in a comma the whole time

Her son was sick and he died. She didn't want his life to end that way and she wanted to share her last moments with him in the way she would want the two of them to spend their last moments. She wanted to eat pancakes with him, though he was no longer their. She wanted to tuck her little boy in for the last time and not have him pass away in a hospital bed so she could take of him one last time the best she could. It doesn't reveal that he is actually dead until the very end, due to the reverse
