Divisée au XIXe siècle, occupée pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale pour ensuite subir le joug soviétique, la Pologne accède en 1989 à la démocratie. À l'image d'une nation meurtrie, victime d'oppressions consécutives, se superpose celle d'une culture florissante, témoignant, au fil des siècles, d'un esprit réfractaire à tout ordre imposé de l'extérieur. Usant de l'absurde et du fantastique, les artistes polonais ont répondu au chaos du réel par des actes empreints de résistance, non pour le fuir mais pour le reconstruire. Découvrez-y le travail d'artistes contemporains de renommée internationale, dont Miroslaw Balka, Monika Sosnowska et Wilhem Sasnal. Leur production dialogue avec des oeuvres phares de l'art polonais des XIXe et XXe siècles. Explorez le fantastique et l'irrationnel polonais ?

L'exposition est organisée à l'occasion de I,CULTURE -- le programme culturel de la Présidence polonaise du Conseil de l'Union européenne.

Divided throughout the 19th century, occupied during the Second World War, and subsequently under the Soviet yoke for decades, Poland became a democracy in 1989. In this wounded country, victim of a succession of oppressive regimes, there developed a flourishing culture that gave expression, down the centuries, to a spirit of resistance to any order imposed from outside. Via the absurd and the fantastic, Polish artists reacted to the chaos of the real world with art imbued with a spirit of resistance, not in order to flee reality, but with a view to reconstructing it. The exhibition will show the work of internationally renowned contemporary artists, including Miroslaw Balka, Monika Sosnowska, and Wilhem Sasnal. Their works will be juxtaposed with seminal Polish works of art from the 19th and 20th centuries. Seeing these works side by side brings home just how deeply rooted the exploration of the fantastic and the irrational is in Polish art.

Polen kende een bewogen politieke geschiedenis. Het werd opgesplitst in de 19e eeuw, bezet tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog, onderging het Sovjetjuk en kon zich pas in 1989 democratisch noemen. In schril contrast met dit beeld van een eeuwig onderdrukte natie staat een bloeiende cultuur die eeuw na eeuw blijk gaf van een eigenzinnige, strijdbare geest. In het absurde en het fantastische zochten Poolse kunstenaars een antwoord op de chaotische werkelijkheid; met hun rebelse kunst wilden ze die niet ontvluchten maar veeleer ombouwen. De tentoonstelling omvat werk van gerenommeerde hedendaagse Poolse kunstenaars als Miroslaw Balka, Monika Sosnowska en Wilhem Sasnal, naast sleutelwerken uit de Poolse kunst van 19e en 20e eeuw. Verken het fantastische en irrationele Poolse universum!
