For many parents in Sudan, sending their children to school is a luxury they simply cannot afford.

And for some, survival depends on sending their children to work from an early age.

However, this situation is now changing, with the government pledging to provide education for every child by the year 2015.

Al Jazeera's Imran Khan reports.

  • There is a number of reasons because Sudan is in the situation as it is. Part is religion, but a major part is sovereignty. United States can never, EVER! understand what Sudan or any other nation in Africa is going through. Religion isn't the problem, it never was. It is the large number of tribes in Sudan. If you asked it is over 180 different tribes if not more all with different culture and languages. So ask me how would you resolved this situation?

  • well look what happened in the north america and europe, when we kicked religion out of the govt. we prospered.

  • nice to see that in some places in Sudan there is progress I'm still waiting for the killing to stop in Darfur... only then can Sudan truely become a great nation under islam or not i don't care ass long as no one is getting killed and raped for who they are

  • stop hating muslims.they will never change anything for their faith

  • The last time your nation was great was under its Islamic roots.....

Even Sudanese kids would know what you said was bullshit because the basic information is off -- most of the worst off people there aren't even Islamic.

  • Sudan should return to its PreIslamic roots to become a great nation that it once was back in the days. But, this is a good experiment... Hopefully, kids one day grow up and read what I wrote and decided to change... :-)
