Nine years ago on Sept 4th (the fall of our senior year at Baylor), Chris popped the question! We had been dating for a little over two years and we new we wanted to get married so of course my answer was YES!
The first part of the video is earlier in the day at Chris' apartment with friends talking about his plans for the night. Then it starts right into the proposal. A little backstory on the situation is:
I was President of my sorority (Pi Phi) at the time and this was our first meeting back since the summer. Anytime someone gets engaged we hold a "Candle Passing" ceremony and we actually held another ceremony just before mine. When someone is engaged they would have a good friend or little sis bring a candle to meeting and let me know that we need to do the ceremony at the end. Most of the time everyone already knows who is engaged so it's just a fun little ceremony to make it official and share the story with everyone. This particular meeting two people brought candles up to me and the other girl asked that we pass hers first (they had let her in on the surprise and knew that everyone would be freaking out after the proposal so it was better to do her's first). I knew who was engaged for the first candle but I didn't know who the second candle was for. It may be hard to tell but we are all standing in somewhat of a circle with the inner group passing the candle around while everyone sings the little song. We passed the candle around 2-3 times (I can't remember now) and then on the last loop the little sis of the engaged girl takes it and walks it around stopping in front of the engaged girl to let her blow it out and reveal to everyone who it is. Then she tells the story of how it happened. In my case, my real sister, Taylor, took the candle and walks it around the last time (I was very confused at this point because her big sis was a good friend of mine I knew she wasn't engaged) and stops in front of me and says "this is for you but something has to happen first." I was totally confused and then you see Chris come out and is standing in front of me while everyone is screaming! After he quieted them all down, he proposed and the rest is history! (which is why I step back and say "there's the story" since everyone just witnessed it and I didn't need to tell it anymore) It was such a great night to be surrounded by all of my best friends and even my younger sister, Jordan, who was a freshman at OU drove down for the big surprise!
It turns out that Chris had been hiding in a closet right behind me on stage for the whole hour+ meeting just waiting until the end...how nerve-racking!
It's twice for lavaliere-ing and three for engagement. :-) What a great moment!
