Webster's Dictionary defines the word "funk" as following: "A type of music having an earthy quality characteristic of the blues". No one really knows when the word was first used in reference to music, but most people will agree that if "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag" didn't usher in the "funk" era of music, it certainly was its first major pop hit. Interestingly James Brown recorded this song in a country recording studio in Charlotte, NC belonging to Arthur Smith (he of "Dueling Banjos" fame). "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag" was James' first Top 10 hit peaking at #8 in July of 1965, and it became one of his signature songs for the remainder of his long musical career.
