Kosovo Dogs Identity Crisis

A famous Illyrian Sheepdog breeder in
Kosovo talks about the future of this breed...

Apr. 18 - Just two months after Kosovo declared independance from Serbia a new political row is brewing.

The Shar Mountain dog was first registered by the FCI (Federation Cynologique Internationale) in 1939 and known as the Illyrian Shepherd dog after the ancient name of the region.

After the disintegration of Yugoslavia, Macedonia requested that the name of the breed change to Macedonian-Yugoslav shepherd dog.

Now, since Kosovo's declaration of independence from Serbia, breeders and owners in Kosovo believe that the dog should reclaim it's original title as the Illyrian Shepherd dog.

Illyrian Sheepdog or Shar Mountain dog comes from the Shara Mountian Region and its a heritage to Albanians from Illyrians, the breed befor was called Illyrian Sheepdog the name was changed by Dr. Pavlovic to Sarplaninac in 1957, without consulting with Albanians wich where the largest breeders.
