GOOGLE against PROP 8

As an Internet company, Google is an active participant in policy debates surrounding information access, technology and energy. Because our company has a great diversity of people and opinions -- Democrats and Republicans, conservatives and liberals, all religions and no religion, straight and gay -- we do not generally take a position on issues outside of our field, especially not social issues. So when Proposition 8 appeared on the California ballot, it was an unlikely question for Google to take an official company position on.

However, while there are many objections to this proposition -- further government encroachment on personal lives, ambiguously written text -- it is the chilling and discriminatory effect of the proposition on many of our employees that brings Google to publicly oppose Proposition 8. While we respect the strongly-held beliefs that people have on both sides of this argument, we see this fundamentally as an issue of equality. We hope that California voters will vote no on Proposition 8 -- we should not eliminate anyone's fundamental rights, whatever their sexuality, to marry the person they love.

  • You love them, yet make them 2nd class citizens?

I have family members who voted against my civil rights. They say they love me, yet they can't love me more than they love their own experience of God. This puts boundaries on their love and perception.

The fact of the matter is that you did, truly, make me and your own family members 2nd class citizens.

Thanks a lot! As if being LGBT wasn't already hard enough..

  • Guess what everyone, you know who owns youtube? GOOGLE! That's right, if you are using youtube, you're supporting same sex marriage. CHEW ON THAT Bigots!

  • @UHOSP one isn't too bright if one uses elton john's personal feelings as reason for overturning the u.s. constitution, don't ya think?

what bigots don't understand (i'd never call you a "bigot"), is that an anti u.s. constitutional referendum can & must be voided even if it's 100% approved by the populace.

real americans (& again i'd never call you a "real american") wouldn't want rights GUARANTEED TO EVERYONE in the u.s. constitution be taken away simply because ignorance & bigotry...right?

  • Wrong to whom? you, me, them?

It won't lose in the courts, keep dreamin' though!

  • Duh! I never stated that one needs religion in order to be married.

Where are you coming up these thoughts? get a life

  • It doesn't matter what Elton John or what you say.

Prop. 8 is still wrong and it will lose in the lawsuits filed against it.

  • Marriage did not come from your religion only.

There are religions that say nothing wrong about homosexuals and their religious leaders can marry same-sex couples.

    What about their religious rights?

ANd BTW, you don't need religion to get married.

  • Why does Elton John agree with YES ON 8 (rhetorical)

Looks like the GLA has another Hate Crime, oh wait. He's one of their own so it's okay.

  • You can't change the fundamental of what marriage is idea and definition came from the religious belief. This country is to protect both sides from slander and gay populous already had the rights but guess that was not enough. They tried to ruin someones belief which is protected by the constitution thus your a hypocrite. You say separation of sate and govt good but then you want govt to change someones religious belief shame. When rights orig passed they did not go through legal channels.
