TNC2009 Promotional Video

The TERENA Networking Conference 2009 will be hosted by the University of Málaga and RedIRIS, the Spanish national research network and held in the beautiful mediterranean city of Málaga from 8 to 11 June 2009.

The TERENA Networking Conference brings together practitioners, developers, planners and users in the research and education networking community to share and discuss the current and future course both in the technical field and in the areas of application and management of technologies, policies and practices with prominent figures from industry, research and government. Here they build common consensus and collaborative links in Europe and beyond.

This year's conference theme is: Virtuality into Reality

It has become increasingly common to use networks and software to emulate physical world entities. This has allowed many of the constraints of physical and geographical space to be removed. Many
people now conduct their social and business lives through online, virtual worlds. TNC 2009 will focus on the technologies and applications involved in this change, examining the following areas: users and
applications, virtual people, virtual technology, implications, support infrastructure.

To open the conference Jorge Cortell of Kanteron Systems will present: Augmented Reality in the Operating Room

A volumetric 3D reconstruction of the patient is projected onto the body in the operating room (adjusted for optical deviations thanks to advanced algorithms, and anchored to the correct physiological location), allowing the surgeon to "peel off layers" (skin, muscle, bones, etc) in real-time with a wireless remote control, and thus see what lies ahead, locating pathologies and structures.

Advantages: minimally invasive surgery (less pain, medication, and risk), and lower costs.

Other keynote speakers will be Stefan Rahmstorf of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, Bill St. Arnaud of CANARIE Inc., William E. Johnston of ESnet, Paul Watson of Newcastle University and Simone Brunozzi of Amazon.com.
