The song was written by John Denver. It does not "belong" to Glee. Matthew did a real nice job on it, and it's a shame it was cut. You need to give credit in your description to the composer.

They should have kept it on the original viewing. I thought I was going crazy when I rewatched the pilot on Netflix. By leaving it out they took away why Will Schuester is the perfect person to teach Glee. You get to know his character and feel for him even more with his leaving. I mean...just listen to that! Yeah...they should have kept it. :3
