In the beginning of each new year, Japanese firemen show off their ladder acrobatic skills.

In the Edo period Japanese firemen used bamboo ladders called hashigo to reach the hard to reach places. They created incredible skills which today are turned into acrobatic performances and even competitions. This documentation is based on two different performances, just one day apart.

The first part shows firemen in traditional attire of the Edo period performing in front of the Shibamata Taishakuten Temple and the second shows a performance on even higher ladders by Hikeshi, members of the Preservation Association of the old Edo Fire Brigade.
