Eric and I took the plunge and went with a hired guide from the border at Ceuta, rode for about 30 minutes in an antique unmetered taxi, and arrived in the old part of Tétouan. The tour showed us some of the architecture dating back up to 800 years, the city skyline, an overly eager Moroccan carpet salesman, a leather tannery, and an authentic Moroccan market.

Tétouan is historically considered one of the more tourist unfriendly cities in Morocco. This doesn't mean that the people there are unfriendly towards tourists rather most tourist opt for the more obvious choices such as Tangier, Fes, and Casablanca. The king was in residence during our stay there, so the police presence seemed to keep things in check. It's definitely not a trip for the unadventurous, but you'll have a good story to tell when you're back home!

Please be careful with the guides at the border. They are NOT official. Agree on prices beforehand, as they will almost certainly increase by the end of your tour. Some amount of bartering is expected. Just be assertive and don't let anyone pressure you into buying anything you don't want. Be prepared to say "La!" 100 times at any carpet shop you enter.

  • Hi all. Please keep the comments appropriate. My friend and I knew from the onset that the guide wasn't official. I wasn't really comfortable with the arrangement the entire time, but the tour was a decent one. We did stick out as the only tourists though. I understand many there are just trying to earn a living and they're all getting a commission if you buy the carpets. My friend and I did not end up buying anything. I would now recommend visiting Tangier for a first time visitor.

  • she wahid ykoun mtahhan a weld lkhaba.

  • We do, we just want to warn anybody going down there. The whole story is untrue as well as the berber market which is by the way everyday, en not once a year as this illegal guide pretend. I wish you A GOOD LIKE IN TANGIER, EN DONT FORGET TO GO FES AND MARRAKECH.

  • This is not a official guide, but just a hustler like so many others who lies to this poor tourists, pretending that this is a berber market while isnt. he is trying to make money, earn some commission when those tourist buy carpets or anything else in the medina, where by the way the market is everyday and not once a month or once a year as a lot of guides pretend, so be carefull ,and dont believe those kind of stories, nor this kind of so called official guides.
