No he has'nt ruined it. This is scarifying, vertimowing, detatching etc. Once collected it looks fine. It rips up tatch (dead grass matter) and allows water and fertilizer to penetrate down to the roots.

This is the thatch below the surface being pulled to the top. Once racked or vacuumed off it will look great.
