This, one of the most reknowned recordings in the history of popular music, was composed by George Cory and Douglass Cross in 1954, and it was intended for songstress Claramae Turner who used it as her encore, but she never got around to recording it. In 1962, the song was shown to Tony Bennett who promptly recorded it, and he then appeared on the very first Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson singing "I Left My Heart In San Francisco" where the public as a whole heard it performed by him for the first time. Tony's recording has made it to the RIAA/NEA list as one of the most historically significant songs of the 20th Century.
Even a recording as great as this one could only make it to #19 on the charts in September of 1962.

@Kellogs43able For what it's worth, if you closely examined the personal and/or political leanings and musings of every artist you might have encountered, you probably would have to exclude about half of those who ever lived. And if you consistently thought like that, you might even go hungry looking for something to eat from a company headed by someone with whom you could politically agree.

@Kellogs43able My contention still stands. Tony, you heard about. The Dixie Chicks, you heard about. I wonder how many you haven't heard about? Frank Sinatra was a total slob and turned Republican only after being socially snubbed by JFK...you want to disconnect with all of his music as well? See what I mean?
