The benefit of getting a well known person to write you a letter is that it makes your application stand out. That's really important for when someone one on the admissions board is looking at the hundredth application for that day. It will make them remember you and at least subconsciously improve their opinion of you.

I think people dont realize that Private College tuitions are misleading. Yes it is higher but they often give you instant grants to help you. Plus the Fasfa can be a life saver for students. I think the most important stats about paying for college are the Default Rate (meaning how many kids cant afford their loans) and the Indebtedness at Graduation (How much money do you owe to the school in total).
