With the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta continuing to suffer from an ecosystem and water crisis, two legislative committees met this week to work through a package of bills to resolve the many crises in the Delta and California water. Assemblymember Jared Huffman (D-San Rafael), Chair of the Assembly Water, Parks & Wildlife Committee, emphasized the urgency of acting now to save the Delta: "We have a dying Delta ecosystem; crashing fisheries; the third consecutive year of drought for most of the state; and the second consecutive year of no salmon season in California. The Delta is at the center of a very real and severe water crisis, and the Delta is in bad shape." The Assembly and Senate water committees heard from numerous witnesses, who agreed the Delta is broken and the package of bills offers a good framework to start discussions on how to resolve the Delta crisis.
