Artur Gold's tango from Poland - Where's Your Heart?, 1930

Tadeusz Faliszewski - Gdzie twoje serce (Where Is Your Heart?) (Artur Gold/ Andrzej Włast) Tango from the theatre "Morskie Oko", Syrena-Electro 1930 (Poland)

This tango was a great hit of the revue "Gwiazdy Warszawy" (The Stars of Warsaw) presented in the theatre "Morskie Oko" in January 1930. The performer was a new diseuse Vera Bobrowska, who made with this schlager her stage debut. She sung it sitting in a gold lamé gown on the piano, and accompanying herself on a little banjo.
The pre war cabaret actor Ludwik Sempoliński - who, in that number was one of four revellers, sitting on the high-stools by the bar and singing the refrain with her - writes in his memoirs, that "Bobrowska did not actually sing it, she rather crooned it, in a emotional, melo-declamatory way". The result was smashing: the audience went mad, applauding frenzily and not letting her go away. In a moment, Vera Bobrowska - who was completely unknown before (the lyricist and director of "Morskie Oko", Andrzej Włast met her on one of high-society parties, where, asked by her friends, she sung by the piano one of Russian romances) became one of first-line stars of prewar Warsaw (and, by the way,Andrzej Włast's lover...).
The text tells a typical story of a gigolette, who disdains her clients and complains about her empty heart and life, wasted by her in a night bar, with "that crowd of fools around".
