In this video I describe what summarising is: feeding back to the client the main points of what they have been saying at the end of the session, or after they have been speaking for a while.
I also talk about asking questions. There are problems with asking questions because they can disempower the client and too many questions turn the session into an interview with the counsellor/helper setting the agenda rather than the client. They can also be intrusive because they can lead to the client saying more than they planned or talking about things they had not bargained for.
But questions can also encourage the client to focus on solutions as well as problems and the present and future as well as the past. Used artfully, ethically and sparingly questions are a useful therapeutic tool.
good to listen to you john, hope you post some more.(ethical, emphaty, disclosure, and etc)
