(6 Oct 2009): New Pakistani Taliban chief Hakimullah Mehsud dismissed reports about his death and vowed to carry out more attacks against Pakistan and the US to avenge the killing of his predecessor Baitullah Mehsud and US drone attacks in the tribal belt along the Afghan border.

"I am alive and sitting in front of you. All the stories about my death are baseless. You can see me that I am alive," Hakimullah said in a video beamed by TV channels on Monday (October 5).

Reports of Hakimullah's first public appearance since he took over as head of the Pakistani Taliban last month reached Islamabad hours after a suicide bomber struck a UN office, killing five persons.

"We will take revenge for Baitullah Mehsud's killing and the continued drone strikes...both America and Pakistan will have to face the consequences," Hakimullah said in the video shot during his meeting yesterday with only five journalists from his Mehsud clan.

The Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan is "united and stronger than before" and working with Al Qaida and other jehadi groups, he added. Hakimullah said the Taliban will not disarm as a condition for talks with the government. The withdrawal of the Taliban from the Swat Valley was a "strategic move" and not a retreat or a defeat, he claimed.

The meeting was held at Sararogha in South Waziristan, an area that has witnessed several drone attacks, on the condition that it could be reported only today.

Hakimullah, considered to be more ruthless than Baitullah, was named chief of the Pakistani Taliban after his predecessor was killed in a drone attack in August. A few other journalists were invited for yesterday's meeting but did not go for security reasons, BBC reported.

The video aired by the TV channels showed Hakimullah sitting on the ground, clad in white salwar-kameez, a waistcoat and a cap. He was flanked by senior Taliban commanders Waliur Rehman and Qari Hussain, who is responsible for training suicide bombers.

Hakimullah's appearance in public will end weeks of speculation over his fate. Pakistani and US intelligence officials had been claiming he was killed in a clash with a rival faction led by Waliur Rehman in the wake of Baitullah's death.

Rumours of his death persisted despite the fact that Hakimullah had spoken to some media organisations by phone on several occasions in recent weeks. One of the journalists who attended the meeting said all the militant leaders appeared to be in good health. Hakimullah looked fatter than at the time of his meeting with a group of reporters late last year.

Several senior militant commanders have been killed in recent drone attacks in the tribal belt. Hakimullah's brother was killed in a clash with security forces last week. Two army divisions, or nearly 30,000 soldiers, have reportedly been deployed in South Waziristan for a possible operation against thousands of Taliban fighters. Hakimullah said his fighters were prepared to take on the troops in case an operation was launched in the tribal areas.
