Kristi Yamaguchi wins the original program at the 1990 United States National Figure Skating Championships to move up to 2nd overall going into the long program.
Kristi was a pretty consistent skater, though her jumps were small and not very high, and her cross-overs were never strong. She also appeared "wobbly" on the ice at times---not a powerful skater like Midori Ito, but nevertheless she was consistent and handled pressure better than other skaters.
KY's programs in 1990 were, choreographically, disappointing. I thought a new short would have really showcased her improvements. As strong as she skated this program, it's still hard to believe she almost won the short at worlds over Ito with the Chorus Line retread.
