From what I'd heard, this sequence was never completed because the effects chief died and took all his secrets to the grave. Some of the blue screen or green screen footage, as it were, was shot, but the effects were not, so the entirety of it was scrapped. The end you are referring to was in an early version of the shooting script, but I'm not sure how much of it wound up in the final shooting schedule, anyways.

This is the "extended ending", however, many people confuse this ending, with the second ending that was shot. This is NOT, the second ending! That ending was longer, and depicted a dual between Molosar and Glaeken, which took place in the upper tower of the keep. During the dual, the roof collapses and a giant laser light comes up from out of the basement of the keep. The two antagonists begin falling. There is more to it of course. Only still photos from this ending have been seen in public.

@iman80zMan F. Paul Wilson. The book is a masterpiece and slays the film

@ashika1009 Hey ashika. I'm responding to your posting about the movie "The Keep" and it's alternate ending. In it, you mentioned the book and how much you liked it. I love the movie, didn't know about the book , but would like to take your recommendation and read it. I wonder, would you mind forwarding the authors name to me by chance? I'm sure I would enjoy it as well. Thanks for your insight. Sincerely Dennis Richards.

Love this movie and have seen it DOZENS of times but first time I've seen this ending. I like it but I think I like the ambiguity of the other ending as it allows the viewer to ponder, but thanks very much for posting it. Now I have something new to ponder.

I worked on the laser SPFX for Glaeken's staff in 1982 at Filmfex when I was 21. Nice to see the movie is still appreciated these days.

His original film ran 3 1/2 hours, that's why the cuts.

Much better ending. Hopefully some day soon we'll see the uncut version. The one we got is such a mess.
I wonder why Michael Mann chose not to keep this ending, it's a lot better than the usual one and it's in the book as well.

@sayno2drugs12 being made in the 80's is what makes it so great! No CGI, just pure imagination and story with a unique musical score by Tangerine Dream unlike the generic mundane shit around now.
And before you think i am some old twat (aged 36) against the use of technology, let me tell you that i have been computing for about 30 years from early 8 bit, 16 bit and current technology, but there is now an OVERUSE of CGI that detracts everything, so as such masterpieces like this don't now exist
