I'm a theist and the way I personally see this goes like this: Any bad thing that I do is also a crime by me against myself. If I do evil to someone else, it's a crime against that person and against myself. Asking God to forgive me, doesn't absolve me from my responsibility to that person I've hurt. I still have to apologize to him/her and make amends. And I still have to be able to face myself, so I need to be able to forgive myself as well.

I been a Christian a long time I don't consider myself better than anyone else.We have all been effected by sin in the world directly or indirectly.Yes I believe in the forgiviness of God for those who are truly sorry.Being forgiven brings responsibility not only means admiting your guilt but facing up to the responsibility of it which may mean being punished going to jail or whatever. When Jesus caught someone doing wrong he forgave them their sins,but said sin no more.

I tend to think the main purpose of religion is to give people something to argue about :)
